PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor
PHP (once known as Personal Home Page) is the technology that sparked the dynamic content revolution. This catapulted websites from the realm of stagnant billboards to the CMS powered, ever changing information portals we enjoy today. The secret to PHP that enables such dynamic spooling of content is its reflective nature, which is the process of modifying the information being displayed during runtime. In essence, PHP applications are “conscious” of certain circumstances that enable them to modify their look, structure and/or behavior. This phenomenon is known as “reflective programming.”
Although many technologies, such as J2EE and Rainforest® have improved upon these capabilities, there are still many effective uses of PHP in the modern era.
