Rich Internet Applications
Flex is a development framework released by Adobe, which threads together many of the technology offerings of the entire Adobe Suite. The intended use of this framework is to develop and deploy RIAs that inherently ensure both cross browser as well as cross platform consistency. Flex is a more suitable medium for developing RIAs than that of Flash in that it enables source code to be checked into a concurrent versioning system (CVS) as opposed to the binary nature of developing applications directly in Flash. Additionally, Flex can inherently communicate and manipulate PDFs and DBs, as well as to leverage webservices from heterogeneous websites, where Flash required Band-Aids, jury-rigs and workarounds to accomplish the same task.
The true beauty of Flex is that applications developed in Flex do not need a new plug-in or client side alteration in order to execute properly. Flex apps run in Adobe Flash Player, which currently boasts an ~97% penetration rate the world over. These features allow Janmedia’s Flex development team to:
- Distribute development work across multiple team members.
- Lesson the development lifecycle and get products to market more rapidly.
- Implement versioning controls.
- Ensure Scalability (new features) and Portability (having a new developer work on the application).
